How do I create a Discovery pass?

The Discovery pass is a widget that allows you to totally open access to your content for a defined duration. This is the perfect opportunity to let readers discover your offers and for you to start building lasting relationships with them!

User tracking depends on the _poool cookie. The journey therefore applies to the user browsing on the same device.

What will the reader see?

The Discovery pass invites a user to enter their email address to get free access to your website for a specific period of time. Once registered, they'll be able to access any content they want during the Pass' validity period.

From the Dashboard side: you should first define a custom group and choose to make this a Discovery pass scenario.

Second, you will create, or edit, the journey, with the Discovery pass as part of this.

Follow the guide… we explain all the steps in this article 👇

Two configuration steps

1️⃣ Custom group creation and association with a Discovery pass scenario

First, we have to define the group of users who we want to offer the Discovery pass to.

In our example below, we propose a 7 days pass.

  • In the Scenarios section, inside your context, click on "Create a group".
  • Enter a name ("7 days pass") and a group slug ("7dayspass").
  • Inside this new custom group, click on "Create a scenario" and choose "Discovery pass" as the scenario type.

You can then give a name to your scenario ("7 days pass") and a duration.

2️⃣ Discovery pass scenario integration into a journey

Once the Discovery pass scenario is defined, you should integrate it into an existing scenario, or into one that you'll create.

The main thing here is to decide when you want to offer the Discovery pass (e.g. after reading 2 articles, or after passing through a registration wall).

After making this decision, go back to the Scenario where you'd like to add this pass. Create and/or edit this scenario, adding the Discovery Pass widget into the journey wherever you decide.

You can then edit this individual widget. We'd recommend configuring all of the following criteria:

  • Indicate the pass and ID name
  • Define an alternative action (to make the wall 'suggestive', if this is what you want)
  • In the "Advanced configuration" block, indicate in the toggle group field the name of the custom group previously defined. This step is essential as it allows the automatic switch of the reader into the Discovery pass scenario defined in step 1.
  • And, of course, set up the actions and widget text to match your strategy

It's almost done… but be careful, one last essential point not to forget!

In the "Scenario Options" section, the scenario duration must match the Discovery pass duration. In our case: 7 days.

Going further

Once the pass has expired, what to do with all those readers who discovered your content during this period? To capitalize on this initial engagement with your brand, you can continue to refine the journeys designed for them.

Following the same toggle group logic, you will create a custom segment that will be fed by the group of users who used the pass.

To set up this step, you should first define a new custom group. Then, go back to your Discovery pass scenario already created, and indicate your new custom group in the section "When a user reaches the end of a Discovery pass, they'll automatically be moved to this group".

In our example below, we will use the group "post_activation_discovery_pass"

You can then build their journey with whichever actions you desire, within this new custom group.

Tracking the statistics of the pass

You can find all the stats on the Statistics page of your Dashboard.

  • The number of activations of the "Discovery pass" widget in the "action performance" blocks
  • The email addresses collected, in the "collected email addresses" block (which also includes email addresses collected as part of the "newsletter subscription" widget, but you'll be able to differentiate them thanks to an ID in exports)
  • Automatically unlocked articles as part of the pass are also stored in the "Automatic unlocks" area.
